Express Entry

Canada's online immigration system for managing applications from skilled workers seeking permanent residence.

Assess Your Express Entry Options

What Is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to manage applications for permanent residence from skilled workers.

Express Entry is not a single immigration program. Instead, it manages candidates who qualify under one or more federal economic immigration programs.

Eligible candidates create an Express Entry profile and enter a pool. Candidates are then ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System, commonly known as the CRS.

IRCC conducts rounds of invitations throughout the year and invites selected candidates to apply for permanent residence.

Programs Managed Through Express Entry

You must qualify for at least one of the federal programs managed through Express Entry before you can enter the Express Entry pool.

01

Canadian Experience Class

Designed for skilled workers who have qualifying Canadian work experience.

This pathway is commonly used by eligible temporary workers and former international students who have gained skilled work experience in Canada.

02

Federal Skilled Worker Program

Designed for skilled workers with qualifying foreign or Canadian work experience who meet the program's eligibility requirements.

Factors such as education, language ability and work experience can be important under this program.

03

Federal Skilled Trades Program

Designed for qualified skilled tradespeople who meet the program's trade experience and other eligibility requirements.

Applicants must also satisfy specific requirements relating to employment or trade qualification.

How the CRS Works

Candidates in the Express Entry pool are ranked using a points-based system known as the Comprehensive Ranking System.

✓

Age

Age can contribute to your CRS score, with the number of points depending on your individual circumstances.

✓

Education

Canadian education or assessed foreign education can contribute toward your score.

✓

Language Ability

English and French test results can have a significant impact on your CRS ranking.

✓

Work Experience

Canadian and foreign skilled work experience may contribute to your overall ranking.

✓

Spouse or Partner Factors

If applicable, your spouse or partner's education, language ability and Canadian work experience may affect your score.

✓

Additional Factors

Certain factors, including a provincial nomination and other qualifying credentials, can provide additional CRS points.

How Candidates Are Invited

IRCC conducts different types of Express Entry invitation rounds throughout the year.

01

General Rounds

General rounds may invite top-ranking candidates who are eligible under one of the programs managed through Express Entry.

02

Program-Specific Rounds

IRCC may conduct invitation rounds for candidates who qualify under a particular immigration program.

03

Category-Based Rounds

IRCC may invite candidates who meet requirements for categories established to support specific economic priorities.

How Express Entry Works

The process involves qualifying for an eligible program, entering the pool and potentially receiving an invitation to apply.

1

Check Eligibility

Determine whether you meet the requirements of at least one Express Entry program.

2

Prepare Your Documents

Obtain required documentation such as language test results and education assessments where applicable.

3

Create Your Profile

Submit an Express Entry profile and, if eligible, enter the candidate pool.

4

Receive an Invitation

Candidates selected in a round may receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

5

Apply for PR

If invited, submit the permanent residence application and required supporting documents within the applicable deadline.

Being Eligible Does Not Guarantee an Invitation

Meeting the minimum requirements of an Express Entry program allows an eligible candidate to enter the pool, but it does not automatically mean that the candidate will receive an Invitation to Apply.

Invitation rounds can vary by round type, CRS score, immigration program and category-specific requirements.

Your Express Entry strategy may therefore involve improving language results, gaining additional qualifying experience, obtaining further education or pursuing a provincial nomination or another immigration pathway.
